Westbrook History: At one time the five properties bounded by Yonge Street on the east, Bathurst Street on the west, Gamble Road on the north and Elgin Mills Road West on the south were part of the Town of Vaughan. The southernmost property, directly on the north side of Elgin Mills Road West, was owned by lawyer William Peters in 1807, but got to know various other owners by 1835. There is some speculation that it was home to the Elgin Mills Hotel of Robert Bingham. This property at the northwest corner of Yonge Street and Elgin Mills Road, eventually, became known as "Elgin Mills," and, over time was, also, home to a tannery, a sawmill, a cooperage and Trench's blacksmith shop.
In 1834 the three properties north of the Peters' property were owned by the Comte de Puisaye. As leader of a group of settlers of French nobility, he tried to establish the Windham settlement along Yonge Street in Oak Ridges, but the settlement failed, and he returned to France in 1834. At that time, part of his property went to Larratt Smith, whose hospitality extended to those of high social standing from Toronto and the immediate locality. His Twickenham Farm was well-known, and is still remembered by Twickenham Park near Bathurst Street, as is Smith's first name with the street named Larratt Lane, which runs north from Elgin Mills Road West along the east side of Twickenham Park. Eventually, Hiram Bernard, a local farmer purchased the property as well as the other two de Puisaye properties to the north. Today, Brookside Drive runs through the east part of the middle property, the property which Bernard used to call Brookside Farm.
The property on the south side of Gamble Road became part of the holdings of Melinda Clark. According to writer, Robert Stamp, this "property is thought to contain the only known archaeological remnants of a Windham settlement cabin."
Westbrook Real Estate:Only twenty years ago, the land on the west side of Yonge Street north of Elgin Mills Road and south of Brookside Drive was made up, mainly, of larger residential properties with older homes. With the installation of services many residents tried to sever or sell their land to builders or developers. Consequently, many applications came before the Committee of Adjustment and the Land Division Committee. Gradually, newer roads and homes were installed, and the community began to transform itself into one suggestive of upscale living.

Westbrook Real Estate: Townhomes
On the east side of Bathurst Street, today, the Westbrook Community branches out along Shaftsbury Avenue. Here, home builders such as Acorn Development Corporation, Wycliffe Homes and H & R Developments built many upscale, detached homes, semi-detached homes and townhouses of different sizes and styles. Streets such as Alamo Heights Drive, Owl Ridge Drive, Westbury Court, Canyon Hill Avenue and Casa Grande Street are well-known and attractive to buyers and sellers, alike.
In the north part of the community along the south side of Gamble Road, townhomes with both double and single-car garages abound, and are, often, included as part of "Gamble Real Estate." This area of once-older homes is, still, undergoing change in much the same way as development occurred in the Elgin Mills/Brookside neighbourhood, earlier. Gamble Real Estate used to be a few older homes on one or two acre lots, but, now, it, too, is being transformed into attractive homes of a smaller size for many different income brackets.
