Mill Pond History: The Mill Pond and the homes of "Heritage Estates" are located on the north side of Mill Street in central Richmond Hill between Yonge Street and Bathurst Street. In 1935 a tributary of the Don River at the site of the present Mill Pond was dammed up by John Langstaff, and a sawmill was built. Local industry grew and helped preserve the Langstaff name in Richmond Hill to the present day.

After 1921 the dam was rebuilt with a pumphouse added by the local Council to pipe municipal water to area homes and businesses. A water tower on Trench Street and filter beds kept the pressure up and the water safe for household use.
Local residents have gathered here for recreational and leisurely activities since Richmond Hill was a village. Now, there are walking trails and wildlife throughout Mill Pond Park, and on summer days people from the town often gather at Mill Pond for a quiet stroll. And, Pioneer Park on Major Mackenzie Park just west of York Central Hospital won the 2010 Technical Innovation Award from the Ontario Public Works Association. Here, "water quality, aquatic habitat and aesthetic appeal" are very important to the residents of Richmond Hill.
Richmond Hill Winter Carnival
Mill Pond Park
Today, there are recreational facilities for children, outdoor concerts and barbecues during the summer, and red winged blackbirds diving, relentlessly, at those who come too close to the nests. Public Skating and the Richmond Hill Winter Carnival with pancake breakfasts in the carnival tent help breakup the, seemingly, endless winter months.
Mill Pond Heritage Estates Real Estate: Although Mill Pond is only one part of Central Richmond Hill, its name is often used to describe an area of desirable homes, including those of "Heritage Estates", and a neighbourhood which is a great place to live. The community is well-treed, continually, well-maintained, mature, and has upgraded roads with some curbs and many amenities at or a very short distance away. At present, the Town plans to upgrade the pavement, curbs, gutters and storm sewers on Libby Boulevard and Bridgeport Street on either side of Mill Street. According to Shirlene Wilson, a local resident since 1977, "Central Richmond Hill," as she likes to say, 'has an eclectic blend of homes and is a busy community, but you don't really hear it."

"Heritage Estates" Homes
The homes can, easily, be classified into "Mill Pond" homes which includes detached homes, townhomes and condominiums and those of "Heritage Estates." Mill Pond homes are a blend of every age, type, style, size and building material. Here the Town has long tried to preserve the "essential character of the neighbourhood." The planning department, the building department and the Committee of Adjustment are active in staying this course. The people plan (public input) is another important ingredient in the preservation of the area.
"Heritage Estates", often called "The Rosedale of the North", is the somewhat Georgian-styled subdivision just west of Mill Pond. Started in the early 1980's, this project, as well as other newer, development proposals, was not without opposition, but, ultimately, was allowed to proceed. As its name suggests, the style of homes was intended to reflect an earlier charm present in many of the older heritage-designated homes in the community. There is a majestic flair in the design of many of the homes. But, as time passed, later additions to the subdivision were less majectic as the slower economy led to some downsizing. Still, the overall appearance is one that gives all who live here a sense of pride and accomplishment.
