 18th Side Road

Rural King History: Some of the many hamlets and villages of King have survived while others have faded away with only a plaque remaining. Names like Linton and Bell's Lake, Eversley, Kinghorn, Rafferty's Corners and King Creek are barely remembered. Others like Laskay, Snowball, Ansnorveldt and Holland Marsh, Glenville, Lloydtown and Kettleby have survived, with some more than others.

Laskay, on Weston Road south of King Road, was named by Joseph Baldwin after 1830 in honour of his hometown "Loskey" in Yorkshire, England. The east side had a sawmill and a dam on the north side of the Humber River, a carding and finishing mill, a store, tavern, shoe shop and post office. After 1856, the west side emerged with a sawmill, lathe shop, tailor shop, barber shop, store and butcher shop. Now, busy traffic almost takes no notice of this once-thriving hamlet.

Septimus Tyrwhitt did not like the name of the settlement that was named after him, so he and his wife had "Tyrwhitt's Mills" renamed to Kettleby after a village in Wales. This village on the present Kettleby Road east of Jane Street lay in a wide ravine with a beautiful stream. Here, after 1842, dams, mill ponds, stores, houses and shops appeared along with a flour mill, woolen mill, oatmeal mill, sawmills, hotels, blacksmiths shops and a distillery. Today the setting here is peaceful again.

Lloydtown, on the west branch of the Humber River about a mile west of Schomberg, was named after Jesse and Phoebe Lloyd. In 1824, Jesse built a sawmill and later a grist mill around which the hamlet prospered. A tannery, foundry, three hotels, three blacksmith shops, many stores and a distillery emerged and the village became more prosperous than Schomberg. Like other settlements in King, Lloydtown has returned to a quiet rural setting as well.

The Holland River, marsh hay, frogs, muskrats and horse-drawn mowers of the 1920's gave way to the "Holland Marsh garden industry" in 1927. In 1934, eighteen families from Holland became the first year-round settlers in the village they called "Ansnorveld" after Ann Snor and the Dutch word "veld" or field. Ansnorveldt still sits in the Marsh with thinning topsoil a major concern among the farmers today.

Glenville, at Highway 9 and Dufferin Street was once the home of a flour mill, sawmill, blacksmiths, church, public school, two hotels, post office and a hat trade. Today, other than the Glenville pond, little remains of the original settlement. Snowball, at Dufferin Street and Aurora Sideroad once had a blacksmith shop, two churches and a school, and is still well-known, but mostly because of its unusual name.

Rural King Real Estate: The real estate selection in Rural King usually falls into three categories. There are detached homes of all sizes and prices. Smaller detached homes can be found in the $250,000 price range while larger homes and those in residential estate subdivisions command prices as high as $3,500,000. Subdivisions like Fairfields Estates on Dufferin Street north of 15th Sideroad, Nobleton Lakes Estates on the east side of Highway 27 north of 15th Sideroad as well, and the homes at King Valley Golf Club are always sought after by buyers and sellers looking for upscale, luxury properties.

Farms and equestrian centres are, also, high on the desirability list of Rural King real estate. The rolling hills of King are perfectly suited for horse farms as well as level areas like Holland Marsh are for farming. Vacant land is in demand, too, for new homes, smaller farms and investment properties. The open fields will continue to be sought after as long as there is pressure from the urban areas for new subdivision growth and other development opportunities.
