Woodland Hill History: In the early 1970's, Newmarket Town Council announced that a major shopping centre was needed. Four development companies each tried to be the first to put forward the best design.
Schickedanz Developments Limited proposed a strip plaza with Yonge Street frontage on its Quaker Hill subdivision. Corporate Properties Limited proposed an indoor shopping mall on its farmland at the south-west corner of Yonge Street and Davis Drive. This international company promised a Hudson's Bay department store, Seaway Hotel, supermarket and retail stores. Community Malls Inc. of Toronto proposed a mall with supermarket, movie theatres and major department store at Davis Drive and Leslie Street.

But the winner was Regional Shopping Centres Limited owned by Simpson-Sears Limited and Cambridge Leaseholds Limited. Its newly acquired property at the northwest corner of Yonge Street and Davis Drive proved to be the ideal location for Upper Canada Mall, especially with the professional marketing campaign to convince the councillors that its plan was best.
Today, Upper Canada Mall at 17600 Yonge Street is owned and managed by Oxford Properties Group. There are over 230 stores and 820,000 square feet of floor space, and is a shopping landmark and meeting place in York Region.
Woodland Hill Real Estate:This Newmarket neighbourhood, until recently, was mainly farmland. It is bounded by Bathurst Street on the west, Yonge Street on the east, and extends from Davis Drive north to East Gwillimbury just below Green Lane West.
Since 2002, it has been built-up with new freehold townhomes, semi-detached homes and detached homes in affordable price ranges. For instance, detached homes sell for less than $750,000 at this time. The fact that the home types, styles, elevations and floor plans are newer is of great importance for today's knowledgeable homeowners, buyers and investors.

This community is, also, attractive for its central location in the region. There is easy accessability to Highway 400 along Davis Drive West and Highway 404 along Davis Drive East. As well, the location on Yonge Street is perfect for shoppers and home buyers from the north and the south. Amenities such as Upper Canada Mall and the neighbourhood, itself, are attractive to residents from Richmond Hill, Orangeville, Bradford, Uxbridge and Georgina.
